CA Healthy Kids Survey

The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is a questionnaire completed at least every other year by public school students in grades 5, 7, 9 and 11. BOMUSD has used the data from this survey and other sources to tell us what students say about their school environment, including support from teachers and other adults; and what students think and do about smoking, drinking alcohol, other drug use and harassment.

We then develop strategies to address any issues we see. Please see the following data from the CA Healthy Kids Survey conducted in the fall of 2006 (the most recent results available on-line as of January, 2010):

We believe that every child has the potential to be successful in life, and we want to provide the kinds of supports and opportunities that help each student achieve their potential. As always, please feel free to contact us or your school site for any questions or concerns.

The Georgetown Divide Ready by 21 Coalition

Student MThe Safe Schools Healthy Students Initiative (SS/HS) is a federal collaboration among the US Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Justice. It was created in 1999 in response to rising concerns about youth violence and school safety.

The SS/HS Initiative provided 3-year seed money grants to more than 200 schools and communities nationwide. The Black Oak Mine Unified School District (BOMUSD) was selected in 2005 as the recipient of a $2.9 million grant to meet the needs of the Georgetown Divide youth and community.  Many projects were initiated during the grant period and continue to grow and develop to this day: all with the overall goal of helping students become healthy, fully functioning citizens by age 21.  The SS/HS grant was recently concluded, but the work of the Georgetown Divide Ready By 21 Coalition continues!

The Ready by 21TM Initiative (RB 21), developed by the Forum for Youth Investment, is the program currently being implemented on the Georgetown Divide (for the first five years, it was part of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant directed by Debra Herr within the Black Oak Mine USD).  . The program has evolved, and is now incorporated as Georgetown Divide Ready By 21.

The Georgetown Divide Ready by 21TM  Initiative helps youth to build Developmental Assets or lifelong tools that enhance academic learning. Youth who are academically, socially and emotionally prepared to meet the demands of employers, community and society will succeed in life. And we will help them get there!

One of the ongoing goals of the grant was to create four "working groups" that represent various ages from 0 to 21.
