Curriculum used in classes throughout the District always goes through a process before it is adopted. The process is spelled out in Board Policy.
The state of California conducts regular reviews of core curriclum which is referred to as the adoption cycle. The idea is to have an orderly process for regularly updating curricula. The state first identifies an approved lists of curricula, then our district, in conjunction with other districts and the El Dorado County Office of Education, identifies a curriculum for adoption. The process is designed to ensure that teachers have meaningful input into the decision making process. Furthermore, opportunities are provided for parent and public input.
Due to the ongoing budget crisis, however, the state recently took the unprecedented action to suspend the curriculum purchasing cycle until at least the 2013-14 school year.
In our District we understand that we have the obligation to balance the importance of having up-to-date curricula with the importance of maintaining a safe and fiscally sound school District.
