Charter School Development Underway

The Black Oak Mine Unified School District is working in collaboration with a group of parents to develop a Charter School.  On January 14, 2010, Black Oak Mine Board of Trustees voted to approve the American River Charter School petition.  That petition now goes to the California School Board for final approval.  With their approval, the American River Charter School will be able to open this coming fall, 2010.

American River Charter School (ARCS) is being designed to serve as an umbrella charter school for several different programs.

  • The North Fork of the charter school is proposed to begin in the Fall of 2010 serving students in grades K-2 with a Waldorf-like instructional model.  The proposed name of this program is "Golden Canyon Charter School."
  • The South Fork of the charter school is proposed to also begin in the Fall of 2010 and will serve students in grades K-12.  This as yet unnamed fork of the program will offer a personalized learning model ranging from site based instruction to full-time homeschool instruction.  Students may attend classes at the site up to five days per week and may also participate in district sponsored sports, activities and if space is available, they may also participate in site-based classes at our traditional schools.  Parents and community members involved in the design of the program are looking at hands on, project based learning.  Similar models that intrigue the design team include the "Grass-Valley Charter School" and "Forest Charter School" both in Nevada County.  A visitation has been scheduled for December 4th.  For additional information, please email Tammy Gabel.
  • The American River Charter school has a "ning" page where detailed information is being collected.  To join the forum and to be a part of the activities, click here:  http://dividecharter.ning.com/
  • The American River Charter School website is now live.  Click here to visit the site:  American River Charter School

The purpose of offering a charter school under the umbrella of the district is to meet the Strategic Plan goal of offering a variety of educational opportunities for students throughout the Divide and beyond.
